Organization to Promote Adult Literacy
PREVENTING ILLITERACY IN THE REFUGEE CAMPS OF GAZA
Palestine is poised on the brink of statehood. Literacy is essential for the citizenry of a fledgling state if it is to have any hope of succeeding and establishing a participatory system of government. The children living in the refugee camps today are the voters of tomorrow.
Sitting at desks they used to share with fallen schoolmates, these students are fortunate to have a school to attend.
Many schools were totally destroyed during "Cast Lead," and students attended classes in the open air.
These are some ways that your tax deductible contributions will be used:
*$ 500 will support one literacy learner for an entire year-long enough to learn to read the directions on a medicine bottle and read which child's name is on the bottle.
*$2,500 will provide a computer and a printer/copier/scanner that will help the women to share their stories and work with each other.
*A library of books to augment the program can be supported with donations of any amount.
*Educational toys and drawing supplies for the children can be supported with donations of any amount.
*Any amount can be contributed toward the $15,000 that would fund a program in a second refugee camp for an entire year!
Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (www.gcmhp.net) helps these children overcome the effects of their trauma. Contributions to the Gaza Mental Health Foundation, a U.S. charity, founded in 2001, sends all contributions to GCMHP. www.gazamentalhealth.org
Many schools of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)were damaged or destroyed. To find out more about UNRWA, and how you can help see their site: www.unrwa.org
